How One Entrepreneur Turned a Spark of Inspiration Into a Sustainable Business

Becca Karel—better known as Mizz Becky—has done what so many of us wouldn’t have the faith or guts to do. She left a well-paying, full-time job to pursue her soul’s passion. The catch? She didn’t know what she was running toward at the time.

Sounds a little insane? Terrifying? Beyond risky?

To the average person, sure. But Mizz Becky is anything but. She rocks blue hair like it were her natural hue, makes glitter look chic, and lights up every interaction with her infectious energy.

In early 2018, she founded Soul Spirit—a “metaphysical shop committed to helping you transform, empower, and attract positive intentions into your life.” Soul Spirit’s signature products are Magic Bundles—made up of dried California sage, carefully chosen crystals, and Palo Santo sticks.

As she approaches her 30th birthday, Mizz Becky is well on track to becoming the force of nature she’s destined to be. I sat down with her to discuss putting her trust in the Universe, turning a spark of inspiration into a physical product, and creating an environmentally responsible business.

Kaitlin Willow: Tell us what drove you to quit your full-time job and pursue your passion. How did this experience feel—from entertaining the idea to leaving the office for the last time?

Becky Karel: I had reached a point in my life when I felt just stuck. I was 28, about to turn 29, and I just felt like something in my life was desperately missing. I had probably the best job I’ve ever had, making more money than I had ever made—but why did I feel so empty? So blah! I felt zero passion, zero motivation. It was just wake up, sit in traffic, sleep, repeat.

I knew I had so much to offer this world, but I didn’t know how to apply this to life and actually make a living & support myself. It was a huge disconnect for me. One day, my moonchild friend from work suggested that I read the book The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein. She said it might help in trying to channel the Universe to help me figure out my career path.

Within a month of reading the book, I started to experience something magical. A huge force—something far greater than anything I had ever experienced—started to pull me so strongly in a new direction. I had no idea where it was taking me, but I was called to keep following the signs and keep following what I was drawn to.

I knew that I had to quit and leave the comfort zone in order to really do what I was called to do.

I reached this point where I spent the majority of my day focused on Soul Spirit (although it wasn’t called Soul Spirit at the time), and I literally wasn’t doing my actual work at the agency. (No joke: I was so inspired I couldn’t sleep) I knew that this journey I was being guided toward wasn’t for me to stay at my 9–5. I knew that I had to quit and leave the comfort zone in order to really do what I was called to do, but, of course, I had my fears and doubts.

Leading up to my last day of work at the agency, there had been a series of the most amazing, magical, unexplainable, universal, cosmic-AF shit going down. I was so overwhelmed.

Okay, whoa. I need to vent to my friend and just make sure I’m not actually going a little crazy here. We went for a walk outside and I was trying to explain to her all these crazy things that had been going on.. and as I said the words “I want to quit this job but I’m scare—” Before I could even finish my sentence, a huge city bus drove by, with big, bold letters on the outside: “T R U S T”.

One hour later, I put in my two weeks’ notice. No fear. No regret. No looking back. It was the moment when I let go, and trust-fell into the Universe.

KW: Where did the idea for Soul Spirit come from?

BK: I’ve been attending music festivals regularly since about 2010, and those were where I was first introduced to Palo Santo, smudging, crystal healing, etc. I became the girl who whipped out the palo santo on the dance floor and started smudging to clear away bad energy and keep the vibes high.

Since reading The Universe Has Your Back, I had been meditating daily while also lighting my sage or palo. These tools had become as normal as water in my daily life.

One Saturday, I was at the farmers market and came across this girl selling flowers, a crystal, and a stick of Palo Santo all wrapped together. They were so beautiful that I bought three of them to give to my friends.

The next day, I gave one of the bundles to my girlfriend, and as she opened it she said, “Oh my god—this is so cool! You should literally do this!”

I just needed that extra little spark in inspiration to seal the deal.

I already knew I loved palo santo and crystals so much. and used them every day. Why not sell them, share these amazing tools, and make this my job?? I thought, wow—what a perfect way to combine something I feel so passionate about and already love so much into a way to make money while sharing this with the world! It were as if everything was already in front of me, but I just needed that extra little spark in inspiration to seal the deal—and this was the initial spark of what became Soul Spirit.

KW: What’s your business philosophy/mission?

BK: My mission is to help others manifest, empower, and transform their life through healing tools from Mother Earth. Whether you feel depressed, stuck in your career, unhappy in a relationship, or just in a funk and don’t know why—there are tools here to help you clear away bad energy, raise vibrations, and call in something greater. And it’s all through a shift in your energy and mindset and the power of the Universe.

This was me not even one year ago. Confused what my life purpose was. Lost. Feeling defeated.

I am—and Soul Spirit is—living proof that you can achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of, even if you’ve never dreamed of it. The Universe has a plan for you far greater then anything you could ever create for yourself. You just have to tune in and T R U S T.

“You can achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of, even if you’ve never dreamed it.”

It is also my mission to be Earth friendly and reduce my carbon footprint as much as possible. It was always a nonnegotiable to create a sustainable business as well give back to the world. We donate a portion of sales to 1% for the Planet, which supports nonprofits dedicated to preserving our home.

KW: Can you share your inspiration for the Magic Bundles and what your product development process looks like?

BK: As I was creating the magic ritual bundles, from the get-go, I knew I didn’t want to use anything that didn’t have a purpose—which ties in to the sustainable business aspect of my business. I had experimented with adding in lavender and some small flowers to my bundles. They were so beautiful—except, when someone was to use the product and untie it, the flowers would just fall apart and probably end up in the trash. To me, this seemed wasteful.

I didn’t want anything to go to waste.

I knew from that moment forward that all tools in my ritual kits had to serve a purpose. The yarn material I used to tie everything together, my hang tag, and my travel bag all had to be eco-friendly and recyclable. I didn’t want anything to go to waste or end up joining the trash circle in the middle of the ocean.

KW: What challenges have you faced as a business owner/entrepreneur?

BK: For me, the biggest challenge I face is having the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want. This is a curse and a blessing. As a creative Aquarian, it is so easy for me to go with the flow and only work on the fun things that I want to work on. Now, since I don’t have anyone telling me when things are due, it’s easy to get sidetracked. I could run an errand at 11:15 on a Tuesday, or I could sit here and do some work. I have to create the discipline and structure in my own life.

KW: Entrepreneurship has got to be stressful and time-consuming. How do you practice self-care and keep yourself sane?

BK: Keeping myself in the flow and aligned with the energy of the Universe is something that is crucial. I feel so lost and depressed when I am out of it. It definitely happens from time to time when I forget to take care of myself. But carving out time for yourself is so important.

To feel grounded and back in the flow I always go back to the same things:

  • Nature
  • Meditation
  • Saging out the weird energy in the air
  • Lighting Palo Santo to create a positive atmosphere
  • Music
  • Journaling & practicing gratitude
  • Writing new positive affirmations & speaking them out loud
  • Watching videos I took of myself when I was in a high-vibe state*

*This is something I did on accident one day and it helped so much! I took a few selfie videos just talking about how happy I was and sharing whatever experiences were going on. I was attempting to post them on my social media and saved a few different versions before I felt comfortable with one  (Still trying to work on that!). I completely forgot about these old recordings, and one day when I was in a really low place, I was scrolling through my phone and found them. To see myself shining so bright and in such a positive space, it was infectious. I highly suggest doing this next time you are just beaming with positivity to help your future self get out of a rut.

KW: What’s next for you and Soul Spirit?

BK: Well, November 11th is the official launch day/launch party! That’s right, 11-11—angel numbers! I had to reschedule my launch a few different times, and it ended up landing on 11-11 (it was honestly the only weekend that worked).  Divine timing of the Universe.

You can expect to see some super fun collaborations and events in the near future! I am just so excited to team up and create with other people within this community and continue to expand our vibes and consciousness! <3 <3 <3
